Tooth form

What the manufacturer publishes about the tooth form of this blade.

TS tooth
A triple chip carbide tooth with a 7 degree rake, designed for foundry work such as aluminium gates and risers and other abrasive non-ferrous metals. Bahco also uses it for narrow bands cutting stainless and high alloy steels.

Set and kerf

The set is the sideways angle given to the teeth. It makes the cut wider than the band body, so the body and the tooth edges clear the cut instead of rubbing. A wider set suits work where the cut tends to close on the blade. We do not publish a kerf or set width figure for this blade: ask us if your job depends on one.

About this blade

Bahco Carbide Triple Set Foundry 3869 is a carbide bandsaw blade built for foundry cutting. Bahco rates it for aluminium including gates and risers, magnesium, zirconium, beryllium, bronze, copper and plastics. Set carbide teeth take the abrasive, interrupted cutting that casting work serves up. Cut to length and welded in the UK.

Specifications come from the manufacturer's published information. If the job is unusual, talk to us before you order.

Reading the TPI

TPI is the number of teeth per inch along the band. A single figure, such as 14, is a constant pitch: the teeth are evenly spaced. Two figures, such as 2/3, are a variable pitch: the spacing changes along the band between 2 and 3 teeth per inch, which breaks up vibration and lets one blade cover a wider spread of section sizes.

Read the pitch against the thickness of metal the teeth pass through. The published rule is to keep between 6 and 24 teeth in the cut: too few and each tooth takes too big a bite, too many and the gullets clog. Thick sections need a coarse pitch, thin sections and tube walls a fine one.

For tube, profiles and bundles the pitch depends on the wall thickness too. The blade finder works it out from your section and names the chart it used.

Frequently asked questions

When is a carbide-tipped blade worth the extra cost?

When the workpiece is too hard, too abrasive or too heat-resistant for bi-metal: titanium, nickel superalloys, hardened tool steels, high-silicon aluminium and induction-hardened bar. On those materials a carbide blade's cutting rate and life per cut usually make it the cheaper option per cut, not the dearer one.

What is the difference between set and unset carbide blades?

Set blades angle some tips outward to create clearance, which suits interrupted cuts and mixed work. Unset multi-chip designs split the cut across differently profiled tips in sequence, giving better finish and life on production cutting of difficult alloys.

How do I measure the blade length my machine needs?

Check the machine's specification plate or manual first: most state the blade length in millimetres. If neither survives, measure an old blade by marking the weld, rolling the loop along a straight line on the floor and measuring the distance covered. The measuring guide walks through both methods.

Can I order a length outside the range shown?

Use the enquiry link under the length field on this page and tell us the length and the machine. We will come back to you.

Full measuring instructions are in our guide, How to measure a bandsaw blade length, and on the custom lengths page.
